A local girl has generously donated her own hair and raised money to support children and young people who have lost hair for health reasons.

Sarah Hawthorne (10), of Ballynahinch, got her hair cut on Saturday. In total, she was able to donate 35 inches of hair to The Little Princess Trust.

The Little Princess Trust is a charity based in England that provides free real hair wigs to children and young people up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions. They also provide funding for childhood cancer research.

This was Sarah’s first time donating her hair in this way.

“Sarah has never donated her hair before and while she thinks her new haircut is different, she is really encouraged by everyone’s support from her school to family and friends,” Sarah’s mother, Dawn, said.

Sarah is a pupil at Spa Primary School, where she got her P6 classmates to join in the fundraising for the charity by doing a sponsored ‘Crazy Hair Day’ on 11 April.

“On the last day of term before school broke for Easter, the class had a ‘Crazy Hair Day’ and staff and all children in her class got involved,” Dawn explained.
