12 DAYS RUNNING…Between 14 December and 25 December Travis Kelly ran a half marathon every day, to raise funds for the work of Home Start Newry and Mourne.

BEING run off your feet is an all too familiar feeling in the build-up to Christmas. It was definitely all go for Travis Kelly, but he didn’t mind one bit.Travis was raising money for a charity that supports local families by taking on a ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ running challenge. He set himself the goal of completing a half marathon every day for 12 days last month – and finished his final half marathon on Christmas Day itself. And it wasn’t all plain sailing, with his Achilles tendons feeling the effects of the long daily runs. But he made it, clocking up about 160 miles during his challenge to raise money for Home Start Newry and Mourne.Travis wanted to raise funds for the charity’s work but also to raise awareness of the work it does.

Home Start is dedicated to supporting families in our community during challenging times. They provide practical and emotional support to parents and caregivers, helping them navigate the difficulties of raising children.Their trained volunteers offer a listening ear, guidance, and companionship to those who need it, ensuring no family feels alone.

Bevin O’Hare, of Home Start Newry and Mourne, explained that things are particularly tough for a lot of families right now.“The cost-of-living crisis has had significant effects on local young families,” she said. “Home Start Newry and Mourne, one of the local family support charities, has seen firsthand the impact this crisis has had on the families we are supporting.

“Many families across Newry and Mourne are feeling the impact on housing costs, with rising rent and mortgage rates.”She added that increased grocery costs are putting a strain on family budgets, “leading young families to seek cheaper options or reduce their overall food quality and variety”.

Families are also having to contend with childcare expenses.Bevin said the cost of childcare is “a significant burden” and added that it is “limiting parents’ ability to work full-time or forcing them to choose between career advancement and family needs”.

Last year, Home Start Newry and Mourne supported 1,090 children and 632 families in the local community.Home Start has been supporting local families in the Kilkeel area for over 35 years and Bevin added that over that time the need for Home Start support has grown, while funding has been greatly reduced.

“Supporting families with issues like isolation, poverty, mental health, disability and domestic violence, Travis and Home Start would really appreciate any support you can give,” she added.

So far, the Twelve Days of Christmas challenge has raised over £4,000 and there is still time to show your support. If you would like to donate to the fundraiser for Home Start Newry and Mourne you can do so by visiting the GoFundMe page https://gofund.me/6321c610
