Harry McVeigh secured a remarkable second-place finish at the All-Ireland Even Age Group Championships in Derry, proving himself a rising star in the world of cross-country running.
Despite facing tough conditions, including heavy rain, strong winds, and muddy ground, Harry displayed exceptional race strategy and composure.
The Newcastle AC athlete, still just 12 years old, was up against rivals up to 18 months older, and his impressive performance raised eyebrows after his breakthrough win at the Ulster final.
From the outset, Harry surged to the front of the pack, quickly splitting the field and forcing his competitors to chase.
By the 1,500-metre mark, he had increased his lead, displaying both strength and tactical intelligence.
His brother, Connaire Óg, also ran a smart race, finishing strong to help secure the Ulster team’s provincial title.
The McVeigh brothers’ success highlighted not only their athleticism but their ability to thrive under pressure, with Harry’s performance demonstrating his growth as both a runner and a strategist.
With just two weeks until the All-Ireland U-14 race in Dublin, Harry is now viewed as one of the top contenders, moving from underdog to favourite.
