An anti-racism demonstration was held in Newcastle on Sunday. Organisers of the event, which took place outside the Newcastle Centre, said that it had been arranged to “stand against the recent racist pogroms that swept across the country”.
“We held this event to stand in solidarity with ethnic minority communities and to demonstrate our disgust and outrage that certain groups of people took it upon themselves to inflict racial and sectarian violence upon innocent communities,” they stated.
“People should never be made feel like prisoners in their own homes, nor should they feel afraid to go to work, send their children to school or to go to local shops.
“The stress, anxiety and harm inflicted upon communities is intolerable. We are so deeply sorry to those who were impacted by those heinous acts.”
Their statement concluded: “Collective blame, organised crime, incitement for hate and violence and imposed terror on groups of people of non-white ethnicity is both a contravention of domestic criminal law and of fundamental human rights, including the right to life, the right to liberty and security of the person, the right to freedom of movement, the right to freedom from torture and inhumane and degrading treatment, the right to health, the right to work, the right to shelter and the right to freedom from discrimination.”
