AN armed response unit was sent to a disturbance in Newcastle on Saturday which left a man requiring plastic surgery to facial wounds.

The man accused of carrying out the attack, William Kennedy, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Monday, charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an offensive weapon, a broken glass bottle, with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The 27-year-old is alleged to have attacked the man with a broken Buckfast bottle outside homes in the Burren Meadow estate, a court has heard. Police said the victim was slashed about the head and body as violence flared on Saturday.
