Ballynagross Ladies are riding high at the top of NIWFA Division 6 following a 4-1 win over Raceview Athletic Ladies at Mountain Quarter last Wednesday evening.
The team, managed by Jane McStravick and Kenny Hynes, sit top of the table with two wins from two games played. They followed up a 5-0 triumph over Shorts with last week’s comprehensive win, with player-manager McStravick scoring a hat-trick in both games.
Downpatrick native Jane formed the Ballynagross Ladies’ side last year, alongside Tanya Murphy, who started out as assistant coach but now plays for the team, after approaching Ballynagross FC committee member David Higgins.
It was a successful first season for the villagers, gaining promotion from the Development League in 2024. But, as Jane explained, success and winning were the last things on her mind when she started the team last year.
“We set it up for mental health reasons and because there’s no (ladies) teams around here. We wanted the girls to have something different to look forward to than just work all day or kids all day. This is a bit of adult time to have the craic.”
