IT usually requires a decent showing in your home games to guarantee overall match victories in the various ongoing Golf Ireland Inter-Club competitions but Cecil Telford’s Bright Castle Golf Club Jimmy Bruen squad adopted an altogether different approach on Sunday past when they faced County Armagh golf in round two of this year’s competition.
Hopes were high that the pairings of Mark Boyd and Kevin Dorrian and Daniel Craig and Michael Farrand would bag the two points that were up for grabs at Bright Castle but when the latter pairing fell to a defeat and only a half point was secured by Mark and Kevin, attention turned to their teammates in the Orchard County at County Armagh Golf Club, where things were not going exactly to plan.
After ten holes in their respective matches, Ciaran Mahon and Johnny Craig were four up, while Brendan Savage and Donal Smith were three down and staring defeat in face, with Brendan getting very little assistance from yours truly.
Ciaran and Johnny held on to secure the win in their match at the 18th hole (one up) and somehow Brendan and Donal clawed their way back into their match to lead after 15 holes.
With news filtering through that a win would see Bright Castle through to the next round, it’s fair to say that things did get a little nervy over the last three holes but the Bright lads held their nerves and made it through to round three where they will face Clandeboye Golf Club.
