Very National Camogie League Division 1B
Kerry 2-8 Down 0-14
By Séamas McAleenan
DOWN only needed a draw from their game with Kerry in Mountcollins on Saturday to preserve their Division 1B status for another season and that’s what they got.
They deserved nothing less from a tenacious performance and could have won it if Ciara Fitzsimons had pointed for the ninth time from a free in the 63rd minute.
She pulled that shot wide, but her return from injury had a significant impact on the game. In each of the other four games, the Down attack lacked a leader, a player who consistently could annoy the score-keeper.
Fitzsimons filled that role with eight points on the day.
Equally important at the other end was the performance of Aoife Sherry, the Mayobridge net-minder, showing great courage to come off her line to deny Laura Collins a clear shot on goal in the 15th minute.
