Antrim v Down

Sunday, Loughgiel, 1pm

The Down camogs begin their championship campaign against an altogether familiar opponent, and they are going to need a big performance if they are to win. Antrim beat Down in the league on 15 March by six points. For Beth Fitzpatrick, who captains the team alongside Clare McGilligan, they have straightforward improvements to make.

“It’s probably just cutting down their scoring threat,” she said. “When we had the chance to push on against Antrim the last day, we sort of took the foot off the gas. So we want a consistent performance across the 60 minutes.

“Antrim have some very strong forwards and a real attacking threat, which we’ve always known throughout the years, and maybe we just backed off in the second half. They had their purple patch and we weren’t able to close the gap, which was disappointing. But you know, hopefully we’re aiming for a better performance against them and that’s all we can hope for.”
