For the first time in Castlewellan Town’s 62-year history, the club is forming a senior ladies’ team. Castlewellan’s ladies’ team has been accepted into the NIWFA (Northern Ireland Women’s Football Association) league pyramid and will begin their competitive campaign in April.
A club statement, posted on Facebook, read: “This is a natural progression for the club, following the great development of girls’ football at underage level in recent years within the town, with many of our teams enjoying great success both on and off the pitch. The club now feels the time is right to make that next step in developing ladies’ football within the town and provide the pathway for our young players to transition into adult ladies’ football.”
The statement continued: “So many people have been involved in the journey of girls’ football in the club so far, and we thank them for all their hard work to date. It’s time to turn the page to the next chapter and continue to tell our story far and wide.”
Ladies’ players born in 2010 or before are eligible to play for the Town this coming season. Any player interested in joining the ladies’ team is encouraged to contact the Castlewellan Town Facebook page, and prospective volunteers are also welcome to get in touch.
