CASTLEWELLAN Town manager Glynn Robinson was pleased with his team’s performance on Saturday, despite conceding an 88th minute equaliser against Amateur League 1C table-toppers Dundonald.
The Bann Road men had gone in at half-time trailing to a Cain Stewart strike in the 28th minute, only to go 2-1 up in the second half thanks to an Andrew Dummigan own goal and a superb Ruairi Croskery free kick with ten minutes remaining.
They couldn’t hold on, however, as Stewart grabbed his second goal of the game late on to ensure a 2-2 draw and a share of the points.
Robinson said Castlewellan were the better side on the day, against a team who sit ten points above them in the 1C table.
“Dundonald are a good team, but we’ve played better sides this year and taken maximum points and that’s not being derogatory towards Dundonald.
“But there’s no easy games in 1C and we know that.
“From a point of view of how we played on Saturday, I know we were the better side – how we set up, the lads’ commitment, the attitude, the work rate – the team have always had a never say die attitude, that’s just the way this squad is.”
Although disappointed to go in at half-time 1-0 down, the former Ballynahinch United manager had full confidence in his players’ ability to come back in the second half.
“We hadn’t done much wrong in the first half, they (Dundonald) put us under a bit of pressure by lumping balls into the box which big Rory (Burns) was coming and collecting quite easily.
“Dundonald didn’t really trouble us until there was a long ball into the box and the ball landed at the feet of their centre forward and he put it in the bottom corner.
“To go in 1-0 down at half-time wasn’t the end of the world, I always know we have a good chance of scoring because of the quality we have in the squad,” Robinson explained.
