Children create colourful new mural for village
A SPECIAL event was held in Annalong on Saturday to show off a community mural created by local children.
The community picnic was held at the Annalong Community Centre at Marine Park, Annalong, on Saturday afternoon.
During the event, the Annalong Community Empowerment organisation (ACE) showcased the new mural, which was made by Annalong Primary School and St Columban’s Primary School pupils with artist Tessa McMurray.
“The mural is part of the Village Revitalisation Scheme (Small Settlement Scheme), administered by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in partnership with the Department for Communities, Department for Infrastructure and Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs,” a spokesperson for ACE said.
“The scheme is delivered in seven areas in the district which includes Annalong. The scheme is implementing projects through the following themes: shopfront enhancement scheme, dereliction, streetscape, open space, and active travel enhancement.”
“As part of the Small Settlement Scheme programme of works, Annalong Community Empowerment delivered arts workshops in the local schools, engaging with artists, school children and volunteers to design, prepare, complete and locate the artwork in Annalong village.
“The new mural will be a welcome addition to the space at the top of Main Street, adding colour and vibrancy while also reflecting the children’s love of the village,” the spokesperson said.
The community picnic event also included music by local singer Jared Green, arts and crafts activities for children and ice cream from The Parlour Annalong. People were also able to visit the historic Annalong Cornmill, which inspired the design of the mural.
Local MLA Diane Forsythe said she enjoyed the “fabulous music” and community atmosphere at the event.
“Congratulations to Annalong Community Empowerment on the launch of their beautiful new mural at the top of Main Street, Annalong. I was delighted to join the local very talented artist Tessa McMurray as she shared her work,” Diane said.
“What a beautiful day to join together for the community of Annalong! Well done everyone!”
Mournes Councillor Glyn Hanna said he was glad to be able to attend the special occasion and to witness the “brightening up and community effort in Annalong.”
