THREE local ladies have raised well over £1,200 for Kilkeel Lifeboat Station.

Karen Cousins, Elaine Matthews and Kelly Cowan climbed Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil in County Kerry, at the weekend.

So far, £1,270 has been donated online, far surpassing their goal of raising £300, and if anyone would still like to make a contribution, it’s not too late. Simply visit www.justgiving.com and search for ‘Elaine Matthews’ or ‘Elaine’s fundraiser for RNLI’.

The women, who were delighted to complete their challenge, ascending and descending the 1,038.6 metre-high mountain on the Iveragh Peninsula, in approximately five hours.

“The weather was lovely going up, but cloudy at the top with a few heavy rain showers on the way back down,” Elaine explained, before thanking everyone for their generosity and support.

She said they were delighted to see so much raised for the local lifeboat station, adding the RNLI volunteers “are our lifeline”.

“Too many people are still drowning. More than ever, we need the RNLI’s help. As a charity, the RNLI depends on our donations so it can go on saving lives and keeping us and our loved ones safe,” she explained.

She added: “RNLI lifesavers are our lifeline. They’re the lifeboat crews who provide 24-hour search and rescue right around the UK and Ireland.

“The lifeguards keeping watch on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands, and the RNLI safety teams and educators working tirelessly to stop people getting into trouble in the first place.”
