THE inclement weather of snow and ice caused disruption at the weekend with roads and pathways covered in frost, and a series of sporting fixtures affected.

That disruption carried on through the week, as this morning Newry, Mourne and Down District Council posted a notice advising residents that some bin collections had been affected due to the adverse weather.

They said; “We will endeavour to collect any missed bins at the first opportunity and householders should continue to leave their bin out for collection.”

Met Eireann had warned of travel disruption on Saturday and into Sunday, with temperatures falling to between -2C and -4C in many areas.

Those frosty conditions led to a swathe of local football fixtures beingcancelled on Saturday, including Valley Rangers’ clash with Fivemiletown in the Intermediate League, Dromara Village’s Premier Division game against Crumlin Star and Annalong’s game against West End Hibs in the MUFL Division 1.

The only games of local interest that went ahead were three McCall’s league matches, and Newcastle versus St Matthews in the NAFL Division One

Castlewellan Park Run cancelled their Saturday event. They said in a social media post ‘Following careful consideration for our volunteers and participants, we have taken the decision to cancel this week’s Castlewellan Park Run due to the inclement cold weather and obvious safety concerns’.
