Following the discovery of dead lambs on a roadside near Castlewellan, the public have been advised that the council is responsible for the removal of dead animals from most public roads.
A member of the public sent images of lambs lying at the side of Kilnhill Road, which had been left there at some point last week. The Mourne Observer contacted Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for a response.
Their statement read: “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council takes on the responsibility for the removal of dead animals from most public roads within the district. The process for removal and disposal by the Council is dependent on the type and size of the fallen animal. If a dead animal is found on a road, members of the public should report this to our Enforcement Team on 0330 137 4047 or email: ehealth@nmandd.org.
“The Council’s Enforcement Team have responsibility for enforcing laws on litter and illicit waste discarded within the district. Legal proceedings may be initiated by the Council if sufficient evidence is available to prove illegal dumping.
