Castlewellan professional boxer Donagh Keary will step into the ring again on Saturday, 8 November, on the Hammer Boxing Promotions show at The Devenish Hotel, Belfast, for a four-round bout with 66-fight veteran Steve Maguire from Lancashire, England.
Following the September 13 loss against Caine Singh at Windsor Park, Keary, his coaches and his management team all accepted that mistakes were made on the night. This 8 November bout will be fought at the super bantamweight (122lbs) weight class, and it will be the first time as a professional that Keary has boxed at his natural weight, putting him on a level playing field with his opponent from weigh-in day to fight day.
In the first two rounds of the Windsor Park clash with Singh, Keary showed his class, outboxing his English counterpart only to get caught with a heavy body shot late in the second round. The Castlewellan fighter struggled to recover, and the excess weight of his opponent showed, with Singh’s relentless come-forward style pinning Keary on the ropes in the third and fourth rounds.
Keary fought back as best as his body and mind would allow him, even catching Singh with a right uppercut in the fourth and knocking his gum shield out. Perhaps a draw would have been a fair result, but the Belfast referee saw otherwise and awarded the fight to the Middlesbrough-based Singh.
Donagh Keary would like to thank all his sponsors who have kindly stayed on board for his upcoming fight, and to his supporters for the overwhelming support he received after his recent defeat. The 21-year-old hopes to record a win against Maguire, which will set him up for another big year in 2026.
