THE Down camogs have reiterated that they are determined to stay in the top-flight of camogie despite what anyone else thinks.

Vice-captain Beth Fitzpatrick told the Mourne Observer this week that competing against the best players in the country in the Senior Championship is where they need to be.

“A lot of people have said that (about dropping down),” she said.

“We have heard past players say that because of the amount of players that we have lost. They think it is better to build it up from a lower level.”

The Clonduff player’s opinion is based on experience.

“It can take a long time to get back to this level,” she said.

“It took a lot of hard work to get up here.

“It is difficult going from intermediate to senior. Players like myself and Dearbhla (Magee) and Rhea (Smyth) we have seen what it is like to come up.

“I think in the first year of playing senior it was a bit surreal when you see the quality of players that we are playing against but that we can turn them over. It was good to see that we can step up.

“Now we are playing at the highest level and we are playing against the top teams, we don’t want to go down.

“It might come to it, but we will take it as it comes.”
