IF DOWN can get another win in their National Football League Division Two campaign, then their potential for greater success grows.
That’s the analysis of former Down defender Conor Garvey who pointed out that momentum is everything when it comes to county football.
“They have Meath on Saturday (7pm, Newry, live on BBC iPlayer) and that is a massive one. If they can get the two points there, it will give them confidence to push on and survive in the league.
“I would say that their goal is to survive in Division Two, which is an achievement in itself when you look at the teams in it.”
Conor played county football for almost a decade, and featured on the 2010 team which reached the Division Two league final and the All-Ireland final. He knows the importance of a good run.
“I can remember in 2010 we moved into Division Two. Our main goal was to survive. That year the more games we won, the more confidence it gave us.
“No one gave us much hope in Division Two that year, but we got to the league final and Armagh beat us.
“You never know where it can take you. It is all about confidence.
“So, if they can get momentum on Saturday, you don’t know where it could take you.”
