Down Medallion Plate final
Down High 32 Rainey Endowed 13
DOWN High brought the Medallion Plate back to Downpatrick for the first time on Saturday following a comprehensive victory over Rainey Endowed at Malone Rugby Club.
Down’s dynamic number eight, Matthew Horner, opened the scoring with mobile front rower, Joe Bailie, adding a second try soon after allowing Down High to race into an early lead.
Freddie Harris converted both tries before adding a penalty. Comfortable at 17-0 up, things became a little more tense when Rainey mounted a comeback, scoring 13 unanswered points, leaving the game in the balance at 17-13 going into half-time.
Following the break, the game began to replicate the first half. Horner touched down again, Bailie added a second try with Harris converting one of these and adding a final penalty.
Fortunately, Rainey were unable to deliver any second-half comeback, leaving the game at 32-13 in favour of the County Down boys at full time.
Jubilant scenes followed the final whistle as the large travelling support celebrated with the boys in this momentous achievement.
