Ulster Intermediate Ladies Football Championship semi-final

Tyrone v Down

Sunday, Dungannon, 2pm

Facing Division One side Tyrone this weekend, Down are underdogs to reach the Ulster final, but their manager said that they are more than capable of upsetting the odds.

Down are defending champions after all, having defeated Monaghan in last year’s decider in a brilliant performance. Manager Colm Donnelly said that the management have laid down the challenge to their players to build on last year’s success.

“We have reminded them that they’re Ulster champions. And we have reminded them that it would be an unbelievable achievement if they could retain their Ulster title. It is going to be extremely hard to do that, but the message we are giving to the girls is, you’ve done it before, you can do it again.”

“In last year’s championship run, Down came in with a bit of momentum after the league. They beat Antrim who weren’t going too well, then Cavan who weren’t overly well and then they played a very fancied Monaghan team and they (Down) clicked for that day and got a performance. They played really well against Monaghan in the Ulster final. That’s the level of performance that we need to get.”

But Colm pointed out that it is going to be very hard to win not only this game, but the entire competition.

“This is going to be a very hard Intermediate Championship to win because they’re all really good teams.”
