Ryan Magill was extremely relieved at the end of Down’s comeback win over Fermanagh on Saturday, saying: “We didn’t come out of the blocks in the second half, fair play to Fermanagh, they came out and kicked nine or ten points on the bounce and we just couldn’t react to them.”
Down have been on a journey over the last three seasons and, in that time, this group have had to go to the well and dig deep on several occasions, which perhaps fed into the belief Magill and the squad had, even as time ticked away and the result seemed to be going against them.
The Burren man reflected, “We knew deep down there is bottle in this team, there’s character and we just had to show it near the end and luckily we did.”
Magill continued, “Dan’s [Guinness] goal brought us back into it and we knew once we had life we were right there.”
Down now face a test that, on paper, is much tougher, with Donegal awaiting on Sunday.
