Down recorded an important 2-19 to 2-14 win over Clare to begin their Division Three campaign in Newry.

Clare finished the first half stylishly and put themselves in a good position as Brian McNamara scored another two-pointer, and Mark McInerney scored a second Clare goal to give them a 2-9 to 0-10 lead.

Down selector Mickey Donnelly said after the game, “There was no panic. We were fairly calm at half-time, in that the message coming from Conor and the boys was that we played fairly well.”

Odhran Murdock was the man who really stood up for Down. His goal near the end was arguably the key score.

Donnelly said, “If anything, I would say the conditions probably changed slightly in the second half, and certainly brought it down to a total dogfight that we could have done without.

“But you know, great players stand up at big moments, and we have an awful lot of faith in them.”
