After a tough start to the season, Downpatrick Cricket Club’s second XI, league winners in the past two years, have found their form again with three wins in eight days. It’s a turnaround that has breathed new life into their campaign. Credit goes to skipper Gavin Ringland, whose leadership has been instrumental in rallying the team and lifting them off the bottom of the table. With renewed confidence, the team now look forward to hosting Templepatrick third XI next Sunday, aiming to win at least four of their final six matches.
Hutton turns up the heat
Sent in to bat first at Derriaghy (third XI) on Sunday, Charlie Hutton, fresh off the golf course, wasted no time getting into gear. He smashed an incredible 109 not out in 60 balls, featuring nine sixes and eight boundaries, leading from the front in a breathtaking opening stand. He was brilliantly supported by Jobin Jacob, who added a rapid 39 (including four boundaries and a six) in a 136-run partnership off just 13 overs. Downpatrick posted a commanding 192-4 in 20 overs, with captain Ringland contributing a handy 19.
Bowlers seal the deal
In reply, the bowling unit worked superbly as a team to dismiss Derriaghy for just 79 in 17 overs. Alex Daniel starred again with the ball, grabbing four wickets for 12 runs in just 16 balls. Arun Geethhakumari chipped in with 2 for 11, Syam Rajmohan took 2 for 14, Jacob Vinod claimed 1 for 7, and new signing Jake Larmour impressed with 1 for 18.
Club on the up
Downpatrick’s ten new signings have provided a much-needed mid-season boost, with more reinforcements on the way. The club is now exploring the exciting prospect of launching a third development team, ensuring depth and sustainability going forward.
