DUNDRUM Coastal Rowing Club hosted its annual Icebreaker Regatta at Dundrum Bay on Saturday, welcoming St Ayles skiff crews from across the Down coastal rowing community for a full day of competitive racing, camaraderie, and classic February weather.
Eight race categories took to the water, with up to ten boats lining up in each, creating a lively spectacle along the shore.
Local clubs Ardglass, Portaferry, Kilclief, Killyleagh, Strangford and Sketrick, joined Dundrum in an impressive early‑season display of rowing strength and community spirit.
The day brought the full spectrum of winter conditions. Morning sunshine provided a gentle start, but by mid‑afternoon, crews were battling fierce driving rain during some of the most hotly contested races.
As the event neared its close, the skies cleared once more, though a biting wind kept everyone on their toes before the final race at 3.40pm.
Despite the challenging elements, spirits remained high both on the water and along the shoreline, where supporters wrapped up warm and cheered each crew across the finish line.
The Icebreaker once again showcased the strong bonds between local clubs. Friendly rivalry mixed seamlessly with encouragement and teamwork, reflecting the best of the St Ayles skiff community.
Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club extend warm thanks to all rowers, coxes, umpires, officials, and volunteers, who kept the regatta running smoothly. Their collective efforts helped create another memorable day on Dundrum Bay.
With the first competitive outing of 2026 now complete, rowers and supporters alike are already looking forward to the next major gathering, Strangford’s Spring Series in April, where clubs will meet again to build on early season form.
The Icebreaker Regatta has once more marked an energetic and uplifting start to the rowing year in the Down coastal area. Congratulations to all who took part, and here’s to another great season on the water.
