Dundrum ladies’ footballers welcomed back Joanna Boden on Thursday past, which is a big boost to the club. The county player got some game time ahead of the upcoming championship, which is good news for a club whose results have not been good during this year’s league campaign. But if they set aside the scores, then there are other positives to take.

Joint-manager Paddy Curry, who is part of a management team that includes Martin Coughlan, Emma Owens, and Gavin Rice, provided the Mourne Observer with a few positive takes from their most recent game against Carryduff’s B team. “Our main positives would be the amount of young girls we had playing. We had five U-16s and three minors playing, which is great, to give them some game time. Niamh Valentine, who is U-16, got her first senior goal. Joanna Boden returned from injury on Thursday which is another plus.”

Last Thursday, they lost their third game in the Division 4A group of the league. That loss came against Carryduff seconds. Their poor run of form could be due to a lack of personnel. “We’ve been hit hard with injuries and travel this year. We should have some injuries cleared up and players returning over the next few weeks.”

But one season’s poor form is not worth dwelling on. In fact, there is an argument that the Dundrum ladies might be stronger because of this season’s run of defeats. “All together we’ve had 11 girls getting senior football for the first time this year. It’s a young squad which hopefully bodes well for the future,” Paddy said.
