MANY local people took part in a special ‘Dunk for Dan’ event on Sunday afternoon in Warrenpoint, despite the snow on the Mournes nearby.

This annual event, which saw people “dunk” themselves into the Irish Sea near the Warrenpoint Baths during winter weather, raised money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

The sea swimmers and dunkers were treated to traybakes and hot drinks to help warm them up afterwards.

Dunk for Dan is also a way to help keep the memory of Dan Spiers alive. Dan, who lived in Warrenpoint, passed away in 2017 at the age of 20.

Dunk for Dan was organised by Dan’s family, particularly his parents Geraldine and Dermot Spiers and his siblings Aaron and Aimee.

“This cause is deeply personal to us,” Geraldine Spiers said. “Our beautiful son, Dan, lived with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) for 20 years. He was courageous, loving, and full of life, but CF took him from us far too soon.

“While groundbreaking drugs are transforming lives, 10 percent of CF patients are still waiting for treatments that work for them. In Dan’s memory, we’re raising funds to support CF research and ensure every patient has the chance to live the life they deserve.”

The family has also set up a JustGiving page for anyone who wishes to donate in Dan’s memory to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, at www.justgiving.com/page/geraldine-spiers-1735990227709.

“Please join us in honouring Dan’s legacy. Your donation, no matter the size, will help bring hope and change to the CF community,” Geraldine said.

“Together, we can make a difference. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
