ELLIE Smyth, a 21-year-old golfer from Spa, Ballynahinch has been awarded the esteemed Royal and Ancient Golf Club Scholarship.  

This scholarship is part of a new initiative designed to identify, support, and develop the next generation of golf’s leaders through financial support and unique connections to The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, The R&A, and St Andrews. 

The scholarship is backed by the world’s oldest and most prestigious golf organisation and marks a significant milestone in Ellie’s journey within the golfing world. The programme received over 200 applications worldwide from young people aged 18-25, highlighting the unique opportunities it offers. 

Ellie, a former pupil of Down High School who is currently studying Sport and Business Management at the University of Stirling, plays golf at Spa Golf Club and Royal County Down Ladies Golf Club. She is the only UK-based scholar among the ten recipients. 

Ellie’s love for golf began at a young age, living just a pitching wedge away from Spa Golf Club. Growing up in a family of avid golfers, weekends were spent on the course, fostering a deep connection with the sport.
