LEE Feeney has been speaking to the Mourne Observer ahead of his Bangor side’s huge game against Dungannon Swifts in the semi-final of the Irish Cup on Saturday.

Kilkeel native Feeney has led the Seasiders to their first Irish Cup semi-final since 2006 and is aiming to guide them to their first final appearance in almost 30 years.

Bangor are also the frontrunners for promotion to the NIFL Premiership, sitting eight points clear of Harland and Wolff Welders at the top of the Championship table following Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Dundela.

It’s not a scenario the former Glasgow Rangers player envisaged when he took his first steps into management with Rathfriland almost ten years ago; in fact, he never envisaged being a manager at all.

“I never even had it in my plans to be a manager to be honest.

“I was a senior player at Rathfriland and then when the manager stepped down, I had to stand in for five or six games towards the end of the season.

“Then Banbridge Rangers approached me and asked me if I would be interested in managing them.

“I was really thankful for that opportunity (with Banbridge). I learned so much, I got well looked after, I was working for good people, so I really enjoyed that.”
