DOZENS of carers were treated to a festive event in Newcastle last week. Organised by the town’s ADHD Hub, Wednesday’s event was attended by a number of local groups and individuals, who were thanked for all they do when it comes to helping in the community. Groups invited to the event included Autism Support Kilkeel and Newcastle’s Chit Chat Group, The Carers’ Hub and supporters of the ADHD Hub, which runs a coffee shop from its Savoy Lane base. In addition, many people who care for loved ones at home were there too, enjoying a little festive-themed break from their daily caregiving.

During the gathering, the guests were treated to a delicious brunch, and some games and spot prizes, plus there was even a visit from Father Christmas, who helped hand out delicious fruit hampers to everyone in attendance. In the region 130 people were on the guest list for the event, which included entertainment provided by members of the town’s The Anchor Yukes group, who performed a number of festive tunes. Speaking at the event, ADHD Hub founder, Janet Ward, said she was delighted so many people had been able to attend. “We have so many wonderful people who volunteer their time to help others,” she said, adding that although it was organised by the Hub, it was for the wider community. “We wanted to recognise the essential, and often unseen, roles people provide for their loved ones and friends too, helping people of all ages,” she continued.

Janet added that the Hub works very hard throughout the year to secure funding for the wider community, to be able to offer a range of event and activities. Thanking all the customers who support the hub’s coffee shop, she said that without their input events like last Wednesday’s would not be as easily achievable. She also thanked what she describes as “the backbone” of the hub – the “fantastic team” of volunteers who help keep it up and running. “Every penny raised, and every hour volunteered, is crucial in ensuring we are able to do what we do in the community,” Janet added.
