Residents of Ardmeen Green in Downpatrick have “had enough” of the unpleasant smells that have plagued their area for years, a local MLA said this week. Colin McGrath added that the persistent problem is having a really negative effect on the day-to-day lives of people living in this part of the town.
The SDLP Assembly member said there are times when the odour is so bad that residents cannot even open their windows or enjoy spending time outside. He is calling for urgent action to identify the source of the smell and determine what can be done to eradicate it.
“The issue, which residents say comes and goes without warning, has been a constant source of frustration, distress and disruption to daily life,” Mr McGrath said. “Despite repeated complaints and assurances over time, locals feel little has changed and confidence in a long-term solution is wearing thin.”
Mr McGrath said residents are at “breaking point” and that they “deserve far better.” “For years now, people living in Ardmeen Green have been forced to put up with foul odours that make it difficult to enjoy their homes, open windows or even spend time outdoors. This is not a new problem and it is not an isolated incident. It is an ongoing failure that residents feel has been allowed to drag on for far too long.”
He added that the impact on quality of life should not be underestimated. “These are families, older people and working households who take pride in their community. They are angry, they are exhausted and they are right to demand action. No one should be expected to live with this kind of nuisance indefinitely.”
Mr McGrath confirmed that he has raised the matter directly with Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins MLA. He wants NI Water to establish exactly why the problem persists and what practical steps can be taken to resolve the issue once and for all.
“I am asking clear questions about the cause of these smells, what investigations have been carried out and what investment or remedial works are required,” the South Down MLA said. “Residents do not want warm words; they want timelines, accountability and a solution.”
He concluded by pledging to continue to stand with residents until meaningful action is delivered. “I will keep pushing this issue until Ardmeen Green gets the relief it has been waiting far too long for.”
