A FANTASTIC £1,250 has just been raised for charity thanks to two events in Dundrum and Newcastle.
On Friday, Newcastle Lions hosted a coffee morning at Scopers, courtesy of Jennifer and Paul Cunningham.
This event was part of the local club’s efforts to mark Childhood Cancer Month, raising funds for Daisy Lodge, the therapeutic short-break centre near Newcastle which is run by the Cancer Fund for Children.
The following morning, Newcastle Promenade was awash with colour as local Lions welcomed participants for their now-annual ‘Daisy Dander’.
The first ‘dander’ was held in the morning with a further taking place that afternoon.
The route, from the Cone of Light sculpture to the bridge at the mouth of the Shimna River, was beautifully decorated with inflatable daisies and knitted and crocheted flowers, courtesy of Creative Village Dundrum.
Both walks were launched by well- known former BBC presenter Noel Thompson who outlined the amazing work done by Daisy Lodge and the number of families who have been supported during their child’s cancer journey before setting the participants off on their dander.
Clough woman, Helen Newell, who is a face painter, provided entertainment for the kids with some great creations.
The coffee morning raised £500 while Saturday’s event raised £750.
The Newcastle Lions are so appreciative of everyone who supported these events, and are delighted with the amazing amount raised.
They would also like to everyone who contributed to these very successful events, especially the four students from Shimna Integrated College – Ellen, Orla, Hind and Ben – who helped with putting up and taking down the decorations as well as collecting donations.
Thanks has also been extended to CHP Mechanical Engineering Dundrum for their generous sponsorship, Paul and Jennifer Cunningham for their hospitality on Friday, Banbridge Old Vehicle Club for the loan of the gazebo, Creative Village for the decorations, REC First Aiders the Shannon family and the council for permission to decorate the promenade.
A spokeswoman for Newcastle Lions added: “The Lions wish to thank the amazing number of people who supported these events raised an amazing amount of money.”
The final event in this round of Lions fundraising for Daisy Lodge will
be a quiz this Friday (4 October)
in the Harbour Inn, Newcastle.
This is due to start at 9pm.
