International golf and media star David Feherty was the guest of honour at Spa last week when his sister Helen Baxter hosted her Lady Captain’s Day.
The intrepid Spa lady members faced rain and biting cold to take part in the event, braving weather conditions the Lady Captain described as “the charms and challenges” of a Northern Ireland summer.
Bangor-born David said that while he had spent almost half his life living in America, his heart would always be in County Down. While this was his first visit to Spa, he said he had been impressed by the warm welcome from so many members, including Bobby Wallace – at 87, Spa’s oldest playing member.
David described Spa as a beautiful and very well-maintained course, which the members should be extremely proud of. After he was given a standing ovation, David described the Lady Captain as his best friend and said that, if not for Helen, he would not have enjoyed the success that came to him in his professional life.
He revealed it was Helen who persuaded their parents to allow him to become a professional golfer at the age of 17 – and with a handicap of 5 – despite their reservations. “It has been a very special treat for me to come here today, to be a part of my sister’s Lady Captain’s Day, to meet all of you and to experience your hospitality. You should all be very proud of this place – it really is very special,” he said.
Out on the field of play, it was Beth Coburn who conquered the elements to take first prize, followed by Vivienne Abernethy in second place. Gwyneth Cordner was third, while Mandy Murphy claimed the gross prize.
The Lady Captain thanked everyone for their support in taking part despite the conditions and extended her appreciation to all those who had made the day possible. She particularly thanked Dale Baker, the Spa Professional; Andy Davies, chair of the entertainments committee; the caterers; bar staff; greenkeepers; and the ladies’ committee.
