Last Thursday and Friday, Lecale Trinity Grammar School hosted two completely sold-out performances of their first-ever stage production, Grease the Musical. Additional tickets released on Thursday afternoon were snapped up within minutes, reflecting the huge excitement surrounding the event.
Across both nights, nearly 1,000 people enjoyed an unforgettable production that brought together pupils from all key stages and perfectly reflected the school’s distinctive ethos of inclusion and community. Months of preparation, practice and dedication were evident in every scene.
The show was directed and choreographed by Head of Drama Miss Catriona Smyth, who praised the cast for their “hard work” and “dedication”, describing them as “a pleasure to work with”. She added: “Their enthusiasm and unwavering commitment at every rehearsal have brought this show to life and made the entire process incredibly rewarding. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve created together.”
Musical Director Mrs Celeste McEvoy also celebrated the pupils’ achievements, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defined the production. “All the pupils have come together as an amazing team, and their support and friendships have truly shone through,” she said.
Principal Dr Fionnuala Moore expressed her delight and gratitude for the tremendous effort invested by staff, pupils and the wider community. “This event is a celebration of the diverse and exceptional talents of our students, who have worked collaboratively and with great enjoyment to refine their roles and deliver a production of the highest quality. I want to pay tribute to the dedicated individuals who have worked tirelessly to bring this production to life, and I extend my thanks to our community for their unwavering and continued support.”
Standout performances came from all the iconic Pink Ladies and T-Birds. Aoibhe and Aine McCoy delivered exceptional portrayals of Sandy and Rizzo, while Jack Curran was perfectly cast as Danny Zuko. A special mention also goes to Orran Sloan, who, in his first-ever stage appearance as a Year 14 student, delivered an “electrifying” debut that captivated the audience.
The production quality, from staging and lighting to sound and musical arrangement, was praised by all in attendance. Many audience members commented that the school could easily have sold out additional performances, such was the demand and the overwhelmingly positive reception.
The Downpatrick school has undoubtedly whetted the appetite for future productions, something the Lecale Trinity Grammar School community will no doubt be eager to see continued in the years ahead.
