St Malachy’s High School athletics coach Phil Hodge with talented brothers Connaire Óg and Harry McVeigh. Connaire Óg’s 8th place in the Ulster Schools’ Junior Boy’s Cross Country race earned him a place in the All-Ireland final which will take place at Mallusk on Saturday (7th March), while Harry’s historic Ulster gold earned him a prestigious spot on the Northern Ireland team which will contest the London Mini Marathon. YEAR 8 St Malachy’s pupil Harry McVeigh once again delivered a masterclass in taking control from the gun at the recent Ulster Schools’ Cross Country Championship Final, stretching the field early and crossing the line 16 seconds clear to claim his first Ulster Schools’ title, becoming the first individual male from St Malachy’s to do so.

Patricia Keating was the only other St Malachy’s student to match this feat, back in 1990. It was a dominant, composed run followed by Harry’s trademark humility.

In the Minor Boys race, the St Malachy’s squad of six showed exactly why they are a group to watch, as they continue to develop their talent in this discipline, finishing as sixth team overall.

A special mention goes to Matthew Crowl, who produced a courageous, focused and determined performance to finish 15th and secure his place at the All-Ireland Schools’ Cross Country Final.

The excitement continued in the Junior Boys’ race, where any of the top ten could have taken the win in an incredibly competitive field.

Year 10 St Malachy’s pupil Connaire Óg McVeigh showed real maturity and race awareness, staying confidently in the lead pack before powering home to an impressive eighth place, improving on last year by two positions.

St Malachy’s High School are proud to announce that Connaire Óg McVeigh and Matthew Crowl will now represent the school at the All-Ireland Schools’ Cross Country Final on 7 March in Mallusk.

St Malachy’s HS wish to congratulate to all the athletes for their dedication, teamwork and outstanding performances.
