Newcastle AC junior and Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche pupil Harry McVeigh’s exceptional achievements have earned him a nomination for the Newry, Mourne and Down Council Sports Awards, where he was recognized as a finalist for Junior Sportsperson of the Year.

Harry has built an impressive athletic resume. As a P5 pupil in 2023, he became the youngest runner to place in the top five at the Flahavan’s Primary School NI Cross Country Finals. He followed that by winning the series outright as a P6 and repeated the feat as a P7, dominating the race with a remarkable 19-second lead.

His dedication to athletics is undeniable. Harry trains relentlessly, whether competing in small local races or larger national events, and his determination has made him a standout performer. He currently holds the title of U-12 Ulster cross country champion, a title he’s secured for three consecutive years. He’s also on track to claim his third McGrady’s Cross Country Series win this week.

Harry’s talent extends beyond cross-country. He smoothly transitioned to track in 2024, earning gold in the U-12 NI and Ulster 600m indoor race in Dublin and silver in the outdoor event in Donegal. His strong performance at the All-Ireland Championships further cemented his reputation as one of the country’s top young athletes.
