Newcastle teenager Dervla Durkin picks her ball out of the hole on the third at the Annesley links, after hitting an ace in only her first official competition.

A 16-year-old golfer from Newcastle has ensured her first official competition was a memorable one by scoring a hole-in-one. Dervla Durkin joined Royal County Down Ladies’ Golf Club earlier this year and only recently received her official competition handicap.

Playing alongside her friends Ellie and Siobhan, and having her scorecard marked by fellow RCD member Heather Keenan, she teed up on the tricky par-three third hole on the Annesley links, unaware she was about to achieve what many golfers dream of for a lifetime.

Dervla hit a clean 105-yard iron shot into the wind, landing it perfectly on the slope at the back of the green. All four players watched as the ball trickled slowly back down the hill and into the hole.

Dervla’s ace sparked noisy celebrations, but no one was more stunned than Dervla herself.
