Allianz National Hurling League Division 2
Kerry 1-23 Down 0-28
LATE points from Dónal Hughes and Paul Sheehan in Tralee on Sunday helped Down win their fifth consecutive game in Division Two of the Allianz National Hurling League and earn promotion to Division 1B for next season.
They trailed Kerry for a while during the second half after a goal from Oisín Maunsell seemed to put the Kingdom in charge.
Then it was score for score over the final stages with the teams level, 1-22 to 0-25, after Pádraig ‘Podge’ Boyle had pointed a free for Kerry with 66 minutes gone.
Substitute Sheehan, a nephew of manager Rónán, then edged Down ahead and Hughes made the gap two at the start of added time.
Although Boyle responded with a free, Sheehan secured victory with the final point in the 73rd minute.
The result means that Down don’t need victory in their postponed game against Meath that takes place in Trim this weekend. But if they pick up a draw in Trim, they are certain to go up as Division Two champions.
