TEN members of Murlough Athletics Club, nine women and one man, travelled to Rathlin Island on Saturday to take part in the inaugural Rathlin Lighthouse Challenge.
Conditions were close to ideal for running, with the main challenge coming from strong winds sweeping across the island.
The scenic but demanding 16-mile route began and finished at Church Bay, taking runners over the island’s rugged terrain to the West Lighthouse, across to the East Lighthouse, and finally out to Rue Lighthouse before returning to Church Bay for the finish.
Although the group took time to capture photos and videos of the spectacular scenery along the route, they were disappointed not to spot any of Rathlin’s famous puffins.
All the Murlough runners completed the race, showing great determination on a tough and testing course. Some enjoyed a well-earned dip in the sea afterwards, while others are already planning a return next year, though a few joked that the lively boat crossing may have been enough to put them off.
There was further cause for celebration as Paula Earley claimed a category win with an excellent performance, while Ciara Laverty raised an impressive £300 for Cancer Fund for Children during the event.
The club also praised the organisers for an outstanding inaugural race. The course was well marshalled throughout, with enthusiastic volunteers offering constant encouragement, while well-stocked water stations and welcome supplies of sweets helped carry runners through the demanding 16 miles.
Congratulations to all who completed the event and represented Murlough AC with pride.
