Peter Law, owner of HF Law Jewellers, has decided to retire and close the family business in Newcastle.

IN THIS Wednesday’s Mourne Observer, Peter Law – of HF Law jewellers – reflects on his decision to close the business after its 117-year existence in Newcastle.

Peter talks about his decision to retire, how he got started in watchmaking, his work with the chamber of commerce, and also how the business has changed in those years.

Of interest to social historians are the stories of how businesses operated differently 50 years ago.

“It is very hard to comprehend how things have changed.

“The night-time economy during the summertime in Newcastle was colossal, especially during the 12th fortnight, when people would flock to Newcastle.

“I can remember my father saying: ‘It’s nearly midnight, I think it’s nearly time we closed’.”
