Kilkeel Hockey Club ladies’ first XI captain Sophie Annett said she “wasn’t expecting it at all” when she received a phone call to confirm she had been nominated for a LocalWomenSport.Com award.
The LocalWomenSport.Com awards honour inspirational women from various sports across Northern Ireland – it’s the only dedicated women in all sports awards in the whole of the UK and Ireland.
Sophie has been nominated for her services to hockey in Kilkeel. “I was shocked, I hadn’t a clue,”
Sophie explained. “I actually hung up when I got the initial phone call – I didn’t realise it was actually true and I had to ring her back. I wasn’t expecting it at all.”
Sophie first began playing hockey in primary school and joined her local hockey club at the age of 17.
She has been the captain of the ladies’ first XI for the past three years and plays an active role at the club.
“I coach junior hockey, I take the P2s on a Thursday night. And then I do a wee bit of fundraising and stuff for them as well – just any way I can help really,” the former Kilkeel High School pupil said.
