Kilcoo’s ladies’ footballers got their season off to a good start when they beat RGU Downpatrick in the first round of Division One, last Thursday.

Kilcoo won by 0-11 to 0-8 at home, but manager Barry McEvoy said that on the evidence of their first game, the team still have plenty of work to do.

“Downpatrick are a good team,” Barry said. “They (Kilcoo) did fairly well. It was a good start, just very, very rusty. We haven’t got very many challenge matches this year and, you know, we have one player on the county.”

The lessons that he took from the game was that the team defended well.

“We’ve a very, very good defence. They’re disciplined, they’re tackling well. So I’ve been happy with the defence.”

The downside is that the forwards have not started well.

“We missed five or six one-on-one goals, which should be put into net. We need to work on that. The forwards have a bit of work to do. We need to get a bit of belief into them and sometimes a better man in a better place is better. They might have been a bit selfish, trying to get the shot on when it wasn’t on. But you don’t jar them for shooting. If it doesn’t go over the bar, it doesn’t go over the bar. You try and get it as close as you can.”

Barry said that the team’s collective attitude cannot be faulted.

“Every night our girls go out to do their best, the best for the team and the best for the club. That’s just the Kilcoo way.”
