KILKEEL man Bobbie McKee has been laid to rest in the town. The funeral for the 69-year-old, who died at his Newcastle Road home last month, took place in Mourne Presbyterian Church on Friday, with burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard. Yvonne McKee, who suffered serious injuries in the incident that cost her husband his life, joined a large crowd of mourners at the service.

Rev William Bingham told those in attendance that Mr McKee – who had worked as the church’s caretaker up until his pre-pandemic retirement – had been “a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and nephew, and friend”, and that he had led “a life marked by gentleness and grace, service and sacrifice, humour and humility”. The death had caused “deep shock” and “immense grief”, and the “incomprehensible” and “unspeakably tragic” nature of it had “broken the hearts of our congregation and devastated the lives of a grieving family”.

The church minister also relayed the McKee family’s thanks for all the support they have received in recent weeks, and said that this had been “great comfort at a time of unimaginable pain and grief”.

At a previous Mourne Presbyterian Church service, Rev Bingham spoke of Mr McKee’s “service to Christ, in so many different ways in this church”, and his “wonderful sense of humour, love and support,” as well as his service over many years as caretaker. He expressed gratitude for his leadership within the Boys’ Brigade, “for his friendship”, and “for all that he did for us in our family here in Mourne”.

Colin McKee, of Canal Street in Newry, appeared before Newry Magistrates Court on 25 March, and was charged with the murder of Mr McKee and the attempted murder of Mrs McKee between the dates of 19 and 21 March.
