THE sun shone, the crowds came, and the Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Regatta on Sunday 7 July was a fantastic success.
Medals were awarded in abundance and the craic was mighty.
There were six races, in various categories, on a 3.5k course around Green Island and back to Killyleagh’s Town Rock.
Teams from Killyleagh, Dundrum, Skettrick, Portavogie, Strangford, Kilclief and Ardglass took part.
The ‘fun race’ at the end of the day proved popular as crews were given the opportunity to row in other teams’ boats.
Safety boats from Safer Waters, Dundrum and Killyleagh’s Cadet boat were on the water from early morning, laying buoys and providing the umpires with on-water viewing, as well as ensuring everyone was safe. A big thank you to all of them for a long day on the water.
In addition, Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Club (KCRC) was delighted to have sponsors for each of the races.
“Local hostelries of The Smugglers and The Dufferin, local fruit and vegetable specialist Finlays Place, local businessman Sean Lennon, and our captains, Joy and Tyler, all sponsored races and the local Eurospar sponsored our refreshment tent,” explained a club spokesperson.
“The contribution of KCRC members was immense as they provided sandwiches and home baking as well as manning the tea tent, the rowing competition and ballot.
“A real team effort and the local residents on the Net Walk were also hugely supportive by supplying the electricity.
“Well done to the members of the club, the crews from the other clubs, the sponsors and the whole community for making it a regatta to remember!”
