What a weekend it has been for Pearse Óg McCrickard!
On Friday evening, he was along the line as Castlewellan became Down junior champions with a comfortable win over Kilclief Beann Dearg. At the same time, his father Pearse was representing him at the Irish News Ulster All-Star Awards evening, picking up an award in the forward line for hurling.
Then, less than 24 hours later, he captained Liatroim Fontenoys to the Watsons Centra Cloughey Down Intermediate Hurling title, top-scoring with 11 points and taking home the Player of the Match award.
However, in his captain’s speech, he acknowledged that the Fontenoys didn’t set out to win this title. “We wanted something more. But things didn’t work out for us in the Senior Championship and we ended up in the intermediate grade.
“Look, any time we step up here to collect the Charlie Keown Cup is still a good day for our club and I promise you our season isn’t over yet.”
Liatroim beat Carryduff by 0-17 to 2-9, but they were faced with a battle after the South Belfast side scored two goals mid way through the first half and led by two points at half time.
But Liatroim ralled as Pearse Óg scored 0-11, Joe McCrickard scored 0-2 and Conor scored 0-3.
