The new Lidl store will open on 19 June.

Lidl will open its new store in Newcastle next month. The retailer made the announcement last week. Built on the site of the former St Mary’s Girls’ Primary School, it will open its doors on 19 June, relocating from its existing town centre location.

The new location will also provide the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team with the space it needs to develop a new facility, future-proofing the charity’s plans and its ability to continue providing a lifesaving service in the area. Having first opened in the town 25 years ago, this new store has been in the pipeline for the last nine years.

Unique for the site is the retailer’s first store with a ‘living roof’ – which it said had been designed to “blend seamlessly” with the store’s backdrop, set within the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Its car park will accommodate 147 vehicles, plus two electric vehicle charging points.

The £6.3m investment will see 15 new jobs added, bringing the total team employed in Newcastle to 37. The project also saw over 200 jobs created as part of the planning and construction process.
