Mayobridge GAC is seeking planning permission for a new gym building. An application for the facility at the club’s Old Road home was lodged with council planners at the start of this month.

Drawings illustrate that the gym would be located at the northeastern corner of the site and would overlook the junior pitch. A concept statement notes that the club currently has “a gym facility in the existing changing rooms”.

“Due to the expansion of the club and increasing club membership, the need for a standalone gym became apparent,” it continues.

“The club has numerous youth, gents’ and ladies’ football teams, as well as camogie teams. The existing facility has limited unisex changing facilities, and this meant different teams had to use the building at different times. The new building will be able to accommodate any club member at any time.”

It is stated that the existing car park and access is “adequate to accommodate the use of the building, as it is not a facility to attract more numbers, but a facility to enhance the experience of the existing members”.

“The design is modern but in keeping with this type of facility found throughout the area,” the statement reads.

“The chosen colours reflect the club identity.

“The area chosen to site the building is of triangular shape and of no use as a playing surface.

“The club intends to use this area as opposed to taking away car parking or playing space.

“It is located a small walk from the car park and will be accessible for all users via a ramped footpath, in accordance with levels for disabled access.”
