WORK on a £450,000 scheme to improve the surface of a road in the Mayobridge area is scheduled to start next week.
Announcing the resurfacing scheme for the B7 Chapel Hill Road, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said it will benefit local residents, businesses and road users.
The scheme will involve resurfacing for 1.6 kilometres at two locations. The urban section of the work will commence at the roundabout to just past the car park for St Patrick’s Church and the rural section will start at Milltown Hill Road, heading west for 1km.
The work is expected to take just over one month to complete.
The Department for Infrastructure has said road users should expect some delays while the work is taking place. It will entail lane closures and, for part of the time, a full road closure.
The department has explained the road will remain open in the evenings and at weekends throughout the scheme.
The Minister for Infrastructure also thanked everyone for their patience while the work takes place.
“This is a substantial investment for the Mayobridge area, which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users,” added Ms Kimmins.
“The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.
“This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Mayobridge area.
“Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 4 September 2026.
“I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
The department has said that to facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme it will be necessary to implement daily weekday lane closures from Monday 27 July to Friday 14 August (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).
There will be a full road closure (Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm) from Monday 17 August to Friday 4 September.
“The road will be open evenings and weekends,” added a statement from the department about the resurfacing scheme.
“An alternative route will be signed with traffic diverted via: B7 Chapel Hill, B7 Bridge Road, C334 Aughnagon Road, C334 Derryleckagh Road, B8 Hilltown Road, B8 Newry Road and vice versa.
“The department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience.
“However, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
“Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Friday 4 September 2026; however, the department will keep the public informed of any change.”
