MAYOBRIDGE ladies’ footballers’ modest ambitions took a dramatic turn this season.
At the start of their league campaign, new manager Ronan Molloy had targeted maintaining their place in Division Three. But in fact, the Sky Blues managed to win the league outright.
“Our aim was to be mid table,” Ronan said. “I knew in the back of my mind if they could click, they could surprise teams.”
He came in at the start of the year eager to settle things down.
“The team last year were hovering around the relegation zone.” While they had the goal of maintainig status, Ronan said that he didn’t want to change how they played football.
“We focused a lot more on the instilling of confidence and we worked on fitness and the basics.”
The ladies were crowned champions two weeks ago. They won eight of their 14 matches, and lost five games. “We got a brilliant result against Liatroim (1-9 to 0-4) at the start.
“We took a hiding against Ballymartin (2-10 to 1-6). That brought us back to earth.”
But Mayobridge managed to settle themselves.
Ronan said: “In our squad there are some unbelievably hard-working players.
“They are a group of girls that are focused on getting better.
“I knew that they would not be far away.”
