A Newcastle family is celebrating 90 years of successful independent trading, as McCready Shoe Style marks a major milestone on the town’s Main Street. The business has proudly served the community since 1936, building its reputation not only on quality footwear but also on strong local ties and the loyal support of generations of customers from across the area and beyond.
The shop was founded by Rathfriland native Robert McCready, who opened the Newcastle premises on 26 March 1936 following the success of his original store. Six years later, he passed the business to his son Ernie and daughter-in-law Edith, who continued to grow it while raising their family above the shop. Their daughter Edna later took over in the late 1970s and remains a central figure today, with her daughter Joanne Sloan now leading the day-to-day running of the business.
Over the decades, McCready’s has evolved to meet changing customer needs, including a major expansion in 1993 that significantly increased retail space. Despite the challenges facing independent retailers, the shop continues to thrive, thanks to a focus on quality stock, excellent customer service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Edna credits hard work, a strong team, and a willingness to embrace change as key to its long-term success.
Family remains at the heart of the business, with multiple generations of customers returning time and again. Joanne and Edna have expressed their gratitude to staff past and present, as well as the many loyal customers who have supported the shop over the decades. To mark the 90th anniversary, McCready’s is hosting a special shopping event running until Sunday, offering customers the chance to celebrate the occasion with a range of in-store bargains.
