Mourne men’s momentum is important – Clarke

According to former county star John Clarke, Down are a dangerous proposition going into this weekend’s round three group game against Monaghan (Sunday, Athletic Grounds, 2pm, live on RTÉ2). The Mourne County are just one result away from automatic qualification for the All-Ireland quarter-finals, and Clarke believes they are in a fantastic place.

“They have serious momentum at the minute,” he said. “Traditionally, when Down teams have momentum, supporters will get behind them and they are a dangerous animal. In a way, Down are in bonus territory. Not too many people would have expected them to go into the last game with a chance to win and top the group to go into an All-Ireland quarter-final. Most people will tip Monaghan to win. That will play into Down’s hands nicely.”

Assured of at least one more game—either a quarter-final or preliminary quarter-final—Clarke says Down are in a comfortable position. “The pressure is off to a certain extent. That will suit Down going into Sunday’s game, where they will play with a bit more freedom. There is a second chance, of course, but to get to a quarter-final, get the easier side of the draw, and have a two-week break to regroup is massive. Both teams will know that. There is no doubt that Down want to win—or a draw will do as well—to get straight to an All-Ireland quarter-final.”

Both Down and Monaghan are on four points after two games, meaning the winner will progress automatically to the All-Ireland quarter-finals. If the game ends in a draw, Down will go through due to a superior scoring difference. The loser will enter the preliminary quarter-finals.

Down have earned their current position thanks to wins in their first two group games, defeating both Louth and Clare. The victory over Louth, in particular, has helped lift spirits within the county.

“It’s been a while since there has been so much positivity about the senior team, particularly on the back of the win over Louth,” Clarke added. “It clearly gave them a huge confidence boost.”

In the full article John goes on to explain the challenge that Monaghan will bring on Sunday, as well as the players who will be crucial for Down.
